Thomas Hood at Wanstead 1832-1835 Author: Brian J. Page, Mark Galloway Publisher: Thomas Hood Memorial Press ISBN: 095258140X A booklet commemorating the 150th anniversary of the death of poet and writer Thomas Hood, son of a Scottish bookseller, who once resided at Lake House in Wanstead Park. It contains a compilation of texts and illustrations regarding his short residency in Wanstead 1832-1835, during which time his son was born, and he published his three volume novel 'Tylney Hall' in 1834, based on the life and goings on at Tylney Hall (i.e. Wanstead House, which had already been demolished some years before Hood took up residence at Lake House). The texts recount Hood's time at Lake House and how financial difficulties and ill health forced him and his family to leave Wanstead, and how he spent his last years back in England after a spell abroad, with family friends in Stratford. There are also many references to Lake House itself, how the once grand summer house in the grounds of Wanstead House had become a "damp and draughty" home to Hood and his family and how the gardens were over-run with rabbits from the adjoining forests. There are a number of illustrations showing how Lake House once was, and where it stood on a map of 1893. Thomas Hood died in 1845 and was laid to rest in Kensal Green cemetery. There are a number of illustrations of his monument that stands there to this day, along with a map of the cemetery pointing out it's location. The booklet ends with some of Thomas Hood's poetry, namely the poems "I Remember, I Remember", "To my daughter on her birthday", "The Exile", "Autumn" and "To a False Friend".
